State Forest and Piscina della Verdesca Trail

Trails in the Park
The place

Circular route in the Circeo State Forest, starting and ending at the Cerasella picnic area. The route takes in some of the most characteristic environments of the lowland forest and reaches the Piscina della Verdesca, a seasonally flooded hollow that preserves features of the original landscape of the «Forest of Terracina».

From Cerasella the trail enters the heart of the forest, passes the place called La Madonnella and reaches the Verdesca area. Along the way there are ancient trees, especially Hungarian oaks, while Turkey oak and pedunculate oak characterise other parts of the forest. In the wettest areas and in the «piscine» (pools) there are also narrow-leaved ash trees.

The Piscina della Verdesca is one of the best-known wet hollows in the forest and is freely accessible, unlike other pools within the strict Reserves. The route also offers chances to spot forest wildlife, including wild boar, the more elusive Italian hare, and amphibians and reptiles of wet habitats.
