Visiting without consuming

Seven rules that make a measurable difference

The Circeo is a fragile ecosystem receiving hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Some behaviours have a concrete effect.

The Circeo concentrates in a small space environments that degrade easily: a dune ridge held together by roots, wetlands sensitive to disturbance, paths on thin soils. Summer tourist pressure is high. These are not generic recommendations: they are the behaviours that here have a measurable effect.

1. Cross the dune only on the walkways

The dune is a vegetal structure. Every improvised path cuts the roots fixing the sand and opens a way for the wind: within a few seasons an erosion gap forms and the beach retreats.

2. Stay on marked trails

Off the track you compact the soil, damage the understorey and multiply parallel paths. On the promontory, where soil is thin, the damage does not repair itself on a human timescale.

3. In wetlands, watch from a distance

A few minutes’ approach can make hundreds of birds abandon a feeding site. Use the hides and binoculars.

4. Collect nothing

Plants, shells, fossils, pottery fragments. Limonium pontium grows only here and on the Pontine islands: picking one flower spike is not a souvenir, it is a subtraction.

5. Take all your waste with you

Including cigarette butts, which contain microplastics, and fruit peel, which in the dune environment does not break down as readily as it seems.

6. Dogs on the lead

Not a bureaucratic formality: ground-nesting species breed in the dune and the forest, and a loose dog is a predator even when it does not intend to be.

7. Move your visit out of season

The most effective single act. May, June, September and October offer the best Circeo — workable temperatures, accessible trails, water still warm — at a fraction of August’s pressure.

The sea in particular

The seagrass meadows off the promontory produce oxygen and hold sediment in place. Anchoring on seagrass destroys it: use the fixed moorings and dedicated buoys where available.
