Trail 758 connects the Torre Fico area with the harbour of San Felice Circeo along the coastal side of the promontory. It is a route of particular historical, scenic and tourist interest, suspended between sea and mountain, with views over the coast and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
An important record of the area’s ancient network of routes is found in the work of the archaeologist Giuseppe Lugli, Forma Italiae – Circeii, published in 1928. In the section on the «Scalette di Torre del Fico» (Little Steps of Torre del Fico), Lugli describes a narrow staircase that, just before the Tower, branched off the road and descended to the shore in seven zigzag flights, adapting to the very steep slope and slipping into a cleft in the rock.
Lugli does not attribute the staircase to the Roman period with certainty: he notes that similar examples already existed in antiquity, but states that it was certainly used in the time of the papal towers to make it easier to get between the beach and the road above.
The route has also played a part in the area’s recent history. In 1990 young members of the Il Fortino Association restored it and made it passable again. The reopening was marked by a public ceremony attended by the parish priest, the town band and the mayor.
Because of its position, the direct contact between the promontory’s rock face and the sea, and its succession of coastal views, the trail is one of the most evocative sea-and-mountain routes of the Circeo. In its scenery it may recall, on a smaller scale, the famous Via Krupp on Capri, although it has had a very different history of management, maintenance and promotion.
