The place
Cistern and remains of a Roman villa on the northern side of the Circeo promontory, between 160 and 180 metres of elevation, near the Fontana di Mezzomonte. Of the villa, long stretches of retaining walls in opus incertum survive; the cistern, once vaulted and accessible from above through an opening, was buried for safety reasons as early as the 19th century and its visible trace has since been lost. The site was documented in the early 20th century by the British scholar Thomas Ashby, among the first to systematically survey the promontory's archaeological remains, and later by the archaeologist Giuseppe Lugli.
