Cisterna Carella

Cisterna Carella

Archaeology
The place

Remains of a Roman villa and its cistern, located in the area once occupied by the Oliveto Baronale, just below the summit of the Circeo promontory. The cistern consists of two parallel chambers, one of which has collapsed, while the other retains a vaulted covering built in rubble masonry with a coarse-plaster finish. Like the promontory's other cisterns, it was part of the water-supply system serving the villas scattered across the territory of ancient Circeii.
